SCULPTING A CONTINENT - Community Hand Tufted Textile Wall Hanging.

‘Sculpting A Continent’ was commissioned as a temporary installation for the Dewsbury Creative Town Arts Programme funded by Kirklees Council in partnership with the WOVEN in Kirklees Festival 2021 and produced by Beam. Alongside the installation a pop up shop was used to let people have a go at hand tufting and contribute to a community wall hanging.

Each Saturday during June 2021, for the Dewsbury Creative Town & Woven in Kirklees Festival, the ‘Sculpting A Continent’ textile installation in Market Square gazebo also had a pop up shop running along side the installation. This allowed the public to better understand the hand tufting process as well as also having a go at hand tufting. Despite covid restrictions, individuals and families could book on to have a go at hand tufting on a stretched canvas building up tufted lines. During the half hour pre booked slot Andrew Warburton explained the principle behind the climate change inspired textile piece as well as be guided to build up a textile piece to then be finished later for a wall hanging for a community space.
