Read moreI am forever stopping to photograph crops in fields. It is a running joke with anyone who is driving with me. Most of them know to keep lookout for them for me. I love the way that the different crops change texture, height and colour throughout the seasons.
Inspired by crop fields on my travels around Yorkshire and other parts of the UK, this rug or wall hanging was designed to emulate the structure and colour through sculpting the pure wool pile.
This CROP rug was one of the first times that I had tried to sketch out my design before hand to get a feel for the shape, structure and colour of the final rug or wall hanging.
After the rug has been drawn up onto a sheet of clear plastic, this is then transferred to the stretched canvas in reverse as hand tufting is created from the back of the rug, shooting the individual colour tufts through the canvas to the front through a hollow tube at the front of the tufting gun by means of compressed air.
The low pile section to the rug is carved back using scissors on the frame. This allows the higher pile section of the rug to be tufted in afterwards and not letting the colours to mix or bleed.
